Venture capitalists in the US invested $7.7 billion in renewable energy projects during 2008 according to a recent report by Greentech Media.

The figure is a record high and was delivered in more than 350 funding rounds, demonstrating that investors are still very keen to invest in renewable energy.

Much of the green technology investment was in solar energy but there has also been funding in energy storage, recycling, green IT and energy efficiency. The success has been put down to the first few years of enthusiasm for the industry and there is a general view that investment will continue from venture capitalists through 2009 but may slow as consolidation in the market begins.
