Wind energy works – it tackles climate change and it improves energy dependence on fossil fuels. This is the message being shouted from wind farms all around the world on Global Wind Day.
Global Wind Day is organised by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and is an awareness campaign for the promotion of wind energy worldwide.
The year 2009 is described by GWEC as “a crucial year for the fight against climate change“.
Decision makers from all over the world will meet in Copenhagen in December to discuss the post-Kyoto protocol agreement. By participating in one of the numerous events organised for the Global Wind Day you will have the possibility of learning how wind energy works, and how wind turbines work.”
Wind energy capacity around the world grew by 28.8% last year according to GWEC. Global wind energy installations totalled more than 120.8 Gigawatts (GW) at the end of 2008. Over 27 GW of new wind energy capacity started generating green electricity in 2008, 36% more than in 2007.
