Brave Developers Submit Planning Application for Wind Turbines on the Isle of White

Cornish Light and Power (CLP) took the bold step of submitting a planning application for three wind turbines on the Isle of White this week.

The site within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was granted consent for 3 much smaller 52m high wind turbines several years ago, however because of the high electricity grid connection costs and restricted turbine tower heights, the project was not economically viable.

The new planning application for three 125 metre turbines at Cheverton Down would supply the average annual needs of 4,800 homes. The wind farm company CLP proposes to pay £1000 per year into a community fund which CLP spokesperson said “could be spent on recycling or nature conservation”. A council spokesperson said that it has received the planning application but has requested further information.

A previous application on a site west of Stoneover, Isle of White was refused in October 2006. The full report is on the Council’s website.
