Wind turbine manufacturer Siemens snapped up a $560m order for 80 turbines off the northern coast of Germany yesterday.
Airtricity’s Butendiek offshore wind farm is located 34 kilometres off the coast of Sylt in Northern Germany. The offshore site has a water depth ranging from 17-20 metres and one of the best wind resources off the coast of Germany.
The contract is for 80 Sieman’s 3.6 megawatt (MW) turbines giving the project a capacity of 288 MW. Airtricity CEO Paul Dowling said “We are happy to continue the good offshore supply relationship with Siemens based on the delivery of 140 3.6-MW wind turbines for the Greater Gabbard project where construction is ongoing”.
Andreas Nauen, CEO of Siemens Wind Power: “This agreement shows that the German offshore market is moving from the demonstration phase to rolling out commercial projects. With more than 90 turbines already installed offshore, the Siemens 3.6-MW wind turbine has a proven track-record for the harsh environment in the North Sea.”
Siemens are currently riding high with over 600 MW installed offshore and an order backlog totalling more than 3,300 MW.
