Boris bails out of wind energy conference

Boris no show at wind conference

Boris Johnson was due to address guests at the eve of the British Wind Energy Association’s 30th conference last week but backed out because of an ‘urgent and unforeseen appointment’.

Despite the no show and the general gloom of London last week, the mood at the Excel Centre where the conference was held was nothing short of glowing positivity.

UK takes first place as world leader in offshore wind energy generation

This week the UK overtook Denmark to become the biggest offshore wind energy generator in the world.

Electricity generator Centrica completed construction of a new offshore wind farm near Skegness this week and increased the number of offshore wind farms in UK waters to a total of 9. The wind farms comprise around 300 turbines with a total installed capacity of 598 megawatts.

UK renewable energy jobs held back by politicians

Government and local councillors should start consenting wind energy projects if a renewable energy manufacturing industry is to be self sustaining in the UK.

A report by Bain & Company for the British Wind Energy Association published today predicts that there will be 36,000 green collar jobs created by 2020.

Wind Energy Questions – Health and Safety (& Base Jumping)

Whilst nothing can be defined as ultimately without effects, wind energy is an essentially benign technology. There are no harmful, emissions, pollutants or waste products in contrast to burning fossil fuels.
Even jumping off a wind turbine seems to be without ill-effect (with a parachute that is) – see this YouTube video below to see [...]

This series of posts “wind energy questions” is aimed at dealing with questions, statements and rumours people come out with when talking about wind turbines. The first in this series is the effect of wind turbines on animals and below is an example of a statement made by a member of the public at a wind farm exhibition:

“The vibrations from wind turbines will scare the snakes out of the grass and into my house petrifying my wife”.

Obama and McCain both claim to support alternative energy and a national carbon cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions. However neither has confirmed if they would put forward a plan to the Congress if elected.
